This video was recorded in Cuba by Amanda Lopez, during a trip organized by the DC Casineros. The interview provides an excellent first-hand account of the origins of Casino Rueda dancing in the 1950s in Cuba. Basically, Cuban teenagers liked watching American swing dancing (what they thought of as "rock & roll" dancing from the 1956 movie "Rock Around the Clock") and modified it for their own purposes. This in-depth interview features Juan Gomez (also known as "El Abuelo"), who was among the earliest Rueda dancers in the 1950s, and his remarks are translated into English by Anara Frank. Mr. Gomez is part of a group called the "Fundadores" (i.e., "Founders"), comprised of dancers who began dancing Rueda in Cuba during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Lots of great historical and cultural information in this interview! This video can also be found on Amanda's Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/166414688

Today, I had the bittersweet experience of touring one of Las Vegas’s iconic landmarks, the Mirage, as it prepares to close its doors for the last time. This legendary resort has been a staple of the Vegas Strip, known for its unforgettable volcano show, luxurious accommodations, and vibrant atmosphere. As I walked through the halls and reminisced about the countless memories made here, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia. From the lush tropical atrium to the stunning dolphin habitat, the Mirage has always offered a unique blend of nature and entertainment. I had the chance to revisit some of my favorite spots, like the beautiful Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, and savor one last meal at their renowned restaurants. Each moment was a reminder of the Mirage’s incredible contribution to the Las Vegas experience. While it’s sad to see such a beloved icon close, I’m grateful for the memories and the magic it has brought to so many visitors over the years. If you have any favorite memories of the Mirage, share them in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the legacy of this Vegas legend together. Thank you, Mirage, for all the unforgettable moments. You will be missed. #GoodbyeMirage #LasVegasIcon #EndOfAnEra #VegasMemories #TravelCindyExplores #VegasLife #MirageMemories #IconicVegas #LasVegasStrip #VegasHistory
