I could power it directly via the USB-C (or USB-A) port on my laptop, and I did not need to use the included extra 5 volt USB-A to micro-usb power cable. It read a DVD at 4x speeds, burnt a DVD-R at 3x speeds, accessed a USB-Drive, and accessed both a Micro SD card and a SD card (but not at the same time) correctly. While the read/write speeds are not amazingly fast, it worked perfectly and the price is very reasonable if you need to access optical disks or SD cards occasionally. I especially appreciate the fact that the combo USB-C / USB-A cable folds up and stows in the base of the device.
